Introduction

Tuberculosis (TB) is a highly contagious infectious disease caused by the bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis. It predominantly affects the lungs but can also spread to other organs. TB is one of the top ten causes of death worldwide, particularly impacting low- and middle-income countries (World Health Organization, 2021).

Causes TB spreads through airborne particles when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or speaks. Factors contributing to TB infection include prolonged close contact with TB patients, a weakened immune system (e.g., due to HIV/AIDS or malnutrition), and living in overcrowded or unsanitary conditions (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).

Symptoms The symptoms of TB vary but commonly include a persistent cough lasting more than three weeks, chest pain, and coughing up blood. Other symptoms are fever, night sweats, fatigue, and significant weight loss. Extrapulmonary TB, which affects organs outside the lungs, can cause additional symptoms depending on the organs involved (Mayo Clinic, 2021).

Remedy TB treatment requires a long-term course of multiple antibiotics, typically lasting six to nine months. The most common medications include isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide. Adhering to the treatment regimen is crucial to prevent the development of drug-resistant TB strains (World Health Organization, 2021).

Future Research

Future TB research aims to develop shorter, more effective treatment regimens, new vaccines, and rapid diagnostic tools. There is also a focus on understanding the genetic mechanisms of TB to create targeted therapies and improve prevention strategies, particularly in high-risk populations (National Institutes of Health, 2021).
